Re: YELP
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 1:41 PMI find yelp to be helpful, but a lot of the times, the reviews are a bit too snarky and unreliable. For the most part, I find that people are a lot more willing to complain about bad experiences than share good ones, so the ratings tend to make the places seem a little worse than they actually are. But that's just my opinion. -

Fri, April 4, 2008 - 10:13 PMI agree with Mark. I find this to be true, that the negative reviews are mostly from people that pehaps have caused themselves to have a bad dining experience, and then get all snarky and pissy about in their reviews. Then there's the flip side, when people just gush about what a faaaaaabulous time they had and so and so forth...
Food is a very personal experience. I tend to take most restaurant reviews with a grain of fleur de sel ; )
However, I do agree with you that Yelp is pretty cool....
Aloha!

Sun, April 6, 2008 - 6:50 PMyes, very true, many reviews are really negative, but not all of them...and yes, taking it with a grain of salt of course....for instance, I just tried "TAMARINDO" in down town oakland, it was DELISH! so good...tapas, everyone on yelp "raved about" there amazing cocunut flan....i thought i was ok...i wouldn't order it again. they did have this amazing crepe with caramel sauce though....
I guess I love writing reviews..and have only written a few negative ones (that really deserved it). I like to read them and see what a lot of people liked (since i really value consistency most with any restaurant) and that's the main reason i like yelp.... -

Tue, April 8, 2008 - 4:04 PMI'm with you Angi! I love YELP, and I admit to YELPing a little everyday....And I always take the reviews with a grain of salt, but there have been a couple of times times that I have read about a place giving someone food poisoning, and ignored it...And then getting it myself! I just smack my head and say" Shouldda listened to YELP"

Re: YELP
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 10:14 PMYelp's okay in finding restaurants I haven't tried. Word of mouth rules, whether it be from people I know, people I know on the internet, or strangers on the internet.
Since it's all a matter of taste anyway, and obviously my taste is more important to me than your experience, I'll give a restaurant at least one try.
