If anyone is interested, we ended up having it at Pyramid in Berkeley.

They have a really nice buffet menu, the price is $30 or less per person, depending on what you want to serve.

The food was great (chicken, tri-tip and salmon) and we had a great server.

I wouldn't have thought to do it there, but my husband found it and it was well within our budget. I'd been to Pyramid before, but mostly had sandwiches or fish & chips, so I had no idea they could fancy it up properly. They did a great job.

Pomegranate in Berkeley. Also Venicia--both are on University. Both moderate to expensive, estimated at around $30/plate if people are wining and dining. Decent wine menus. Less adventuresome, more traditional, and can be cheaper, Giovanni's.

If I could afford it, we would do this at Nopa, but also want to keep things in the East Bay to avoid lots of driving for out-of-towners. A lot of folks will be here from the Midwest, and I also want to treat them to the goodness that is dining in California.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
