GOOD Burmese?

topic posted Thu, July 19, 2007 - 2:34 PM by  offlineDB
I've had Nan Yang in Rockridge-I thought it was overpriced and unimpressive.

I tried the one in Alameda also unimpressed with the food.

I miss Burma Superstar and Mandalay from SF!!! Anyone know of anything that compares in Oaktown? I heard a rumor that there is a Burmese Restaurant in downtown Oakland but I haven't found it. I NEED a good Rainbow Salad or a good Green tea salad on a fairly regular basis!

Please help!

If you find one, please let us know!

I love the green tea salad at Burma Superstar. I'd give Nan the nod over the one in Alameda, but pales in comparison to BSS.

The one in downtown oakland is called Battambang on Broadway near 11th.

      It's decent, cheap not spectacular.

sorry to clarify, that's a cambodian restaurant.

to my knowledge there is no strictly burmese restaurant in downtown oakland

I worked near there for 5 years and scoured the surrounding area for every decent restaurant.

What's really strange is that Burma Superstar recently bought the Burmese restaurant in Alameda and the quality dropped noticably. I love Burma Superstar, but they are simply not trying here and the old owners were actually doing something pretty special.
Of course as soon as they bought it the place was suddenly packed which, I guess, is the point.

Yah, unfortunately the brothers are not really burmese or restaurant people. They just loved burma ss and bought it on the condition of the staff staying there. They must not have made the same deal in alameda. Bummer!

I went a few weeks ago and found Bagan to be quite good. The rainbow salad and tea leaf salad is the same ad Burma Superstar's and really what I go there for. This is my personal dream come true. The service we experienced was good to great.

It was packed even early on a SAT nite.

Not Burmese, but if their cuisines are similar, there's Yak and Yeti Nepalese in Elmwood on College. It's near Ashby. I work over there and was impressed.
