Does anyone have any recommendation for favourite lunch spots around here? I have my tried and true basics, but I'm looking to branch out a bit.

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?
Sat, January 14, 2006 - 4:49 PMOff the top of my head...
Sea Salt - Located on San Pablo just south of Dwight. A little pricey, but some of the best fish and chips you'll ever eat in your life. Comes with malt vinegar aioli!
Ruen Pair - The best Thai restaurant in the East Bay in my opinion. Lunch is a little cheaper than dinner, but both are reasonable
Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe - Good diner food. Great shakes. Try the chocolate shake with Guinness!
Daimo - Very cheap and good Chinese in the Pacific East Mall off of Central
O Chame - Good noodle soup, but a little more expensive than most noodle soup places. On 4th St. in Berkeley
Picante - Just off of Sixth and Gilman. Great Mexican. -

Sun, January 15, 2006 - 12:55 AMChaat Cafe on university in Berkeley is great. I also love Kasuga (japanese) on San Pablo nr. Solano in Albany.

Tue, January 17, 2006 - 5:46 PMI'd like to second the recommendation for Rudy's. Really great place. -

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 7:17 PMoh yeah. I go there all the time. I always feel a little underdressed when I go there, though! I dress like a freak in the evenings when I go out, but I definately have a day side which is very normal. Love them, though!

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley
Sun, January 15, 2006 - 11:50 AMSomeone mentioned Vic's Chaat...which is great if you love hardcore Indian, but I prefer Breads of India on Sacramento (more fusion Indian...their curries are amazing).
Bacheeso's on the corner of Dwight and San Pablo is also great. It's Mediterranean style and they serve an all you can eat buffet for around $8. They normally have two meat dishes, a soup, several pastas and salads, around six seasonal veggie side dishes (these are often quite filling), roast turkey, and a couple light desserts. It's not fancy, but the food is tasty and unique. They also have a great chicken pesto sandwich. -

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley
Sun, January 15, 2006 - 12:11 PMSam's Log Cabin - On San Pablo in Berkeley...they actually "make" fish sticks there! Great breakfast for lunch too.
La Mediteranee - College Ave. Elmwood....is there any reason to get anything other than the mediterranean plate
Khana Peena - 3 locations in Berkeley but go to the one across from the campus on Oxford for actually very good buffet indian
Dopo - Piedmont Ave...they make this great italian variation of mac and cheese only at lunch
Any of the taco trucks around the High Street area of Oakland

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 6:11 PMConversation II near City Hall, in City Center Plaza. They have great Mediterranean platters that are about $5. Super friendly and fast service. Love the workers there. -

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 10:27 PMI'd like to jump on the Rudy's bandwagon - good food.
Also Long Life Vegi on University - any kind of Chinese you can think of but is non-meat (broccoli and vegi-beef, etc). You can get a massive, yummy plate for $5. -
-
Rudy's
Wed, January 18, 2006 - 7:09 PMAs much as I love their food, I find it strange that they only serve one chicken entree. Even on Tuesday (their Fried CHicken night) they're often out by the time we get there...and there's no other chicken on the menu. My sweetie doesn't eat red meat so he never wants to go there anymore...waaaaaa! -

Re: Rudy's
Thu, January 19, 2006 - 11:12 AMGood suggestions! Wondering if you all know about Zatar's...it's nearby and I want to know more about it before I venture in.
Anyone? -

Re: Rudy's
Fri, January 20, 2006 - 7:36 PMsunnyside cafe on solano

Re: Rudy's
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 10:47 AMI went to Jodie's last Saturday. It's on Masonic, and tiny and easy to miss, just south of Solano. That was the -best- fried chicken I've ever had (except for Harold's Chicken Shack in Hyde Park, Chicago, but that's a bit of a commute). Sadly, they only have the chicken on Saturday, I'm told.

Zatars
Mon, January 23, 2006 - 10:54 AMLOVE Zatars. Service is not very speedy, its cash only but the food is great and the restaurant is beautiful. Its like Turkish Iraqui California Fusion, all organic, many ingredients from the garden. They have an email list too. Its a bit pricey but its worth it. -
-
Re: Zatars
Mon, January 23, 2006 - 5:15 PMwhere are Rudy's and Zatar's please?
also check Lanesplitters pub/pizza @ San Pablo/Univeristy (they even serve vegan pizza)
Indus Village Pakistani @ San Pablo/Hearst
Sugar Bowl Cafe/Bakery @ 5th and Hearst
and all the food on 4th street in berkeley..... -

Re: Zatars
Mon, January 23, 2006 - 6:15 PMRudy's is at the corner of Hollis and Park in Emeryville...

Lanesplitters is great too. Really good pizza by the slice and they've got Boont. That's pretty much all I need!

Turkish Kitchen
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 7:00 PMI thought Zatar had some fantastic dolmas...but, man, was it pricey! There is a new place called Turkish Kitchen across the street that serves turkish food that is more reasonably priced. My experience last night was that the meat dishes were a bit salty, the doner being the mildest meat dish I tried...and I was really, really pining for a glass of retsina to go with the food...but they only had a short list for wine and beers (only one turkish white and red on the menu). Still, it was packed...definitely a downtown eatery style. If you're getting meat with a platter or entry don't get the same kind of meat in the appetizer...and the dolmas were not as impressive as one would hope.

Wed, January 25, 2006 - 10:09 AMNobody's yet mentioned Mama's Royal Cafe, on Broadway at around 40th, but it's one of my favorites. When I lived closer, I ate there once a week or so. It's crowded on weekends but usually calm on weekdays.

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?
Thu, May 25, 2006 - 10:29 AMIs juans on San Pablo?
Also, a new Chinese Restaurant (fairly new) which is super good, super cheap, and super big is at LUCK Chinese on San Pablo and almost gilman, before REI.
I would also second BACHEESO'S on san Pablo, its super yummy, and recently now open for dinner!
Becky's on College just did a re-modeling, and "looks" really fancy, but the prices are super reasonable, and the "generals chicken" is to die for! plum sauce....yummm.... -
-
Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?

North Beach pizza by the slice 11-4, yum
Mehak has a 7$ lunch buffet ( Indian)
and for Greek, we LOVE Sophia Cafe on Solano.

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?
Sun, July 6, 2008 - 8:45 PMDefinitely go to the Little House Cafe for lunch! It is in Alameda on on the corner of Blanding and Oak. The food is amazing and the prices are ridiculously reasonable. Each day brings a whole list of specials including burgers on Wednesdays (beef or lamb or turkey-just depends on the mood of the chef). They have great salads too! Definitely check it out. -

Oh yeah. I had a panini of grilled veggies and cheese there and it was really, really good. One of my friends likes the breakfast items. Another place that has good sandwiches, but much more basic and homey is Johnathan's on Santa Clara, right next to Long's. It's only open til 4:30 though. I love the egg salad there. -

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 11:37 AMHas anybody mentioned BakeSale Betty's in Oakland's Temescal neighborhood ( Rockridge del Sur )? Last time I was there I was guided to order a fried chicken sam'mich. Good eatin'! -
-
Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 8:29 PMI enjoyed the fried chicken sandwich a great deal, even though I typically dislike both fried chicken and cole slaw.

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?

Re: Good lunch spots in Berkeley/OaklandAlameda/Albany, etc?
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 10:40 PMIt depends on what you are looking for.
Woody's Cafe on Park Blvd in Oakland doesn't have a large menu, but is a good place to eat and surf.
If you like Hot Dogs, go to "O My Dawg" on 2nd St right by Broadway in the Jack London Area. The Fries (fritz) are almost orgasmic.
If you are looking for Chinese, give Ben's a try. They are on 3rd about a block away from Broadway in the Jack London Area.
If you want Indian, give Ghazal at the corner of 2nd and Broadway a try. They have a $9.99 special during the lunch hours.
Another great Chinese place is Jin Sing on 35th Ave right above Foothill Blvd in Oakland. Parking sucks, but the food is Wonderful.
For "Fish and Chips" try J & S in the 300 block of E.18th. in Oakland. Very little seating, but a good meal.
For Soul Food, Flynt's is the best, but Everette & Jones is good also.
