Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 4:23 PMCafe Colucci is my fave too. But Red Sea (right by Claremont/Telegraph) isn't too shabby either.

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Sat, June 30, 2007 - 12:34 PMBlud Nile was always my favorite too. Ashame it is not around any longer.

Fri, June 24, 2005 - 4:45 PMCafe Colucci is my favorite. My old favorite was Asmara. -

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Sat, June 25, 2005 - 3:54 PMBlue Nile's inerja bread doesn't have the same tangy flavor as other restaurants in this area. I wonder if it's a regional thing. -

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 4:12 PMBlue nile has been trying to cut costs for a while...they recently stopped serving lunch. Probably their injera is not fermented the way it should be in another cost-cutting measure.
Damn I want some Ethiopian food now!

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Tue, May 2, 2006 - 12:02 AMEthiopia on Telegraph and Ashby in Berkeley has an all vegetarian lunch buffet that's quite good. -

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Thu, November 9, 2006 - 12:50 AMAny other good Ethiopian places? -
-
Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Thu, November 9, 2006 - 9:01 AMI think that the Red Sea is great too; they have little nooks along the wall for couples to sit in, and great vegetarian dishes. They also get bonus points for being within walking distance of my house! -

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Sat, November 11, 2006 - 4:39 PMIt's on Claremont just a block up from the intersection of 52nd and Telegraph. It's attached to a bar and a little hard to spot, but I say give it a shot. -

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Sat, November 11, 2006 - 9:46 PMWe regularly go to Julie's longtime favorite Asmara, on Telegraph just on the other side of 51st.

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Fri, November 10, 2006 - 10:13 PMIs Cafe Colucci the one on Telegraph and Ashby? It's been a long time, but I didn't like it. The food arrived butt cold (now there's a phrase), and the people weren't very friendly.
My all time favorite is Cafe E./Cafe Eritrea on Telegraph and 40th. The staff their are always nice. And Asmara I will always love for being my first experience of their cuisine.
Has anyone been the one on Piedmont Ave yet? -

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Sun, November 12, 2006 - 3:15 PMcafe colucci is at telegraph and alcatraz. -
-
Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Wed, November 15, 2006 - 10:26 PMMy favorite is Addis on Telegraph just south of Alcatraz just on the strength of their Shiro wat. I wasn't so taken with Ethiopia Cafe on Telegraph just north of Ashby. Although they were definitely cheaper than Addis. Good, but somehow, not as good. -

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Thu, November 16, 2006 - 12:51 AMOne nice thing about Ethiopia Cafe is that they have a lunch buffet and an outdoor dining area.
Er, two nice things.

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Fri, December 15, 2006 - 9:08 PMI was wondering if anyone new of any Ethiopian grocerys in Oakland? I wanna score some berbere and other spices and try cooking some of these dishes at home. Anyone else make Ethiopian food? -
-
Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Sat, December 16, 2006 - 11:00 AMI personally have not been to any. But one of my old roommates did go and pick up a big ole vat of berbere and injera in one of the N. Oakland stores on Telegraph. Somewhere in between 25th and 51st! I think I've noticed 2 to 4 different stores that most likely would have it.
That's pretty vague, but give you a general area, eh? If you're real lucky you'll find the 2nd store that the roommate went to. The owner was extra nice and excited and had suggestions--and our food was delish! -

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Sat, December 16, 2006 - 4:54 PMThanks Rebecca
I found out a little grocery store on grand in the lake merrit area that is ethiopian owned. I'd actually been in there before but wasn't looking for that kinda stuff. I guess they carry berbere there. But I'll difenately look for the place on telegraph the next time I am over there.

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean - Groceries
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 12:41 AMHey,
In addition to all of the grocery stores you already know right around 40th and Telegraph. check out some local liquor stores. U&I on Telgraph has all that and they are open pretty late.
There's also a big liquor store by Lake Merrit on Grand that has tons of stuff. If you are looking for Cou lett (the Ethiopian curry paste with the onions already in it.) This place is most likely to have it.

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Tue, December 19, 2006 - 5:16 PMI used to live in Temescal, and I preferred Asmara to Cafe Colucci. I'm vegetarian, so I can't comment on their meats.

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Sat, May 12, 2007 - 9:48 PMI absolutely adore a fairly new place on Grand Ave. called Enssaro (sp?) excellent food, friendly service
You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I even had a spicy chopped liver dish that I loved, and I'm
NOT a liver person! But I'm mostly partial to the lamb -
-
Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Sat, May 12, 2007 - 10:24 PMMmm, chopped liver!
Red Sea's sauces were noticeably different from Asmara's - more acid, maybe?

-
Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Wed, May 16, 2007 - 1:29 PMAsmara for me! Been going for more than 10 years.

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Fri, August 31, 2007 - 4:18 PMI have tried all the Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurants within a mile up and down Telegraph and IMHO Red Sea is the best hands down (IMHO). Though to be honest there are a few new ones to try and I think Red Sea has started to tone down their spices to meet the perceived American pallet. Next time I’ll just tell them to spice it like they were serving it to an eccentric Uncle. That should do the trick! -

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Sat, September 22, 2007 - 2:36 PMCafe Colucci was the best but they raised their prices too much.
Definitely prefer injera made with 50% teff (inside of the white pancakes made with all wheat)
Other places not yet mentioned:
Cafe Eritrea Teleg/40th
Djena (?) MLK/40th
FinFine Telegraph below Dwight (in the back of the food mall)
Mossab on piedmont
Abyssinia Telegraph near 52nd
ALSO in SF: Rasselas, Club Waziema, Massawa, Cafe Ethiopia, Assab, Axum -

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 4:08 PMThe last two times I've been to Cafe Colucci seemed different. I've been going to them for over 10 years. Maybe it was just off days for the chef. The seasonings were a bit off and the quantity was noticeably less. I'll go back again and see.
Ensarro is delicious! The employees are so nice. That liver/lamb dish is called doulet. It's my favorite!

Re: Best Ethiopian/Eritrean
Wed, November 21, 2007 - 12:12 PMI was a diehard Cafe Colucci fan but that was before I found Finfine. It was recommended to me by an Ethiopian classmate and it blows Colucci out of the water. Also, the family that owns it is incredibly sweet. I have been slowly converting each of my friends and they all agree that it is the best Ethiopian they have tried.
