kid friendly AND healthy??

We always go out for dinner some place special on birthdays. My daughter's birthday is in a week and a half and she's just been put on some pretty serious dietary restrictions..... her cholesterol is through the roof so no butter, no cheese, nothing fatty. I was thinking someplace vegetarian, but the only one I know isn't very kid friendly. I'm sure there's gotta be someplace in Oakland or Berkeley that fits the bill... any suggestions?

thanks for your thoughts!

Well, there's fellini on university (www.fellinirestaurant.net). It's got this dark modern hipster cali-italian vibe going on, but it's a good restaurant that specializes in also having a lot of vegan options that were pretty yummy. Especially during the dinner hour I've seen lots of families there. It's sure to be a little crowded though, and reservations are only for parties of 6 or more (so says the website). nice thing is that the menu is fully omnivorous....and the vegan options can be crazy filled with vegan meats too...

and there's all the local vegetarian/seafood chinese places, longlife on university, great wall on college

And there's sushi, that'd fit the bill for healthy. and it wouldn't have to be vegetarian even. There's a fun sushi boat place on college near the very yummy zacharys, isobune is the name; or another on grand avenue, samurai sushi boat by the theatre (fbtw, I haven't been there yet, but it's been there for a couple years now & they've plenty of competition in the area)

This is the bay area, so as long as you're going in the earlier part of the evening, there tend to be families out for dinner, so you probably won't be the only ones out and about! Hopefully, this was helpful, and I hope your daughter has a good time despite food restrictions!

what about Herbivore in Berkeley (on Shattuck/channing)?....if you go early (like 6 ish) i'm sure it would be fine...and theres also GOlden Lotus on 13th/Franklin in Downtown that is AMAZINGLY good!

You didn't say how old your daughter is. Fifteen... she might like an Asian veggie place; ten... probably not.

You might be surprised what you could put together at a Mexican place if you just hold the cheese and
sour cream (I always do as I don't do well with dairy). Cactus Taqueria is VERY kid friendly: Friday evenings
it's like a Chuck-E Cheese (sp?) in there. And horchata is a nice, sweet dairy free drink. I'd say check out
this option if your daughter is on the young side, especially if you want to bring some kids along that don't
have the same restrictions. I have no health problems at all with a red chicken mole tostada (hold the
    cheese).

Their menu can be found online. It says they use low-fat oils, too.
