Where to find good Vietnamese food

My wife is a great fan of Vietnamese food having grown up near a good one in San Diego. However she hasn’t been able to find one in the Bay area that she likes nearly as well. The problem is (as I understand it) most Vietnamese restaurants are actually owned by Chinese and as such have Chinese cooks. She swears there is a difference in flavors and I have heard the same from other people.

So, does anyone know of an authentic Vietnamese restaurant in the bay area? Or perhaps you have a local favorite restaurant where the chef (regardless of origin) has the right touch!

Many Thanks!

I am a great fan of Huong Tra Restauran in Richmond, on 12221 San Pablo Ave. (between Macdonald and Barrett). They have great phở and other dishes. As to their origins, my friend (who is Cantonese Chinese) says that they are of Chinese origin, but have forgotten that). It's a bit crowded on weekday noons, what with folks from local businesses and a nearby hospital, but in the evening, they have a little more space.

I would check out any of the local Vietnamese restaurants along International Boulevard. In the general area between 8th Avenue and 23rd Avenue. It's a neighborhood filled with Vietnamese people, so they are probably more Vietnamese and less Chinese in the kitchen.
